21 April 2015Liam wins third Manchester UCI BMX Supercross World Cup

Liam saw off the challenge of world champion Sam Willoughby in the final to complete a time trial and supercross racing double at the National Cycling Centre on Sunday.

The victory gives the 26-year-old a perfect start to the defence of his UCI BMX Supercross World Cup crown which he won in 2014.

"It’s just mind-blowing," Liam said.

"There was so much talk coming into this weekend, of a three peat, I don’t think that has ever been done before.

"To get out there and deliver in such a good manner, I’m so pleased with our performance.

"It’s never easy when you performing in front of a crowd as rowdy as this - they want you to win and I’m so pleased that I was able to deliver."

An imperious Liam won all of his races on his way to the last eight and in the final his start was too strong for the field as he took the holeshot to lead into the first corner.

Willoughby was in pursuit but the Australian crashed out on the penultimate corner although it was doubtful he would have been able to catch an in-form Liam.

Britain's Tre Whyte joined Phillips in the final but the 21-year-old saw his podium hopes dashed when he crashed on the second corner. The world bronze medallist crossed the line in seventh.

2014 finalist Kyle Evans nearly joined his teammates but missed out a final spot by one place as he finished fifth in his semi-final heat, which saw Whyte take third to progress.

Charlotte Green reached the women’s semi-finals but unclipped from her pedal in the opening straight.

The 20-year-old, who had an injury-burdened 2014, fought back but could not make up the ground to the top four who qualified for the final.

It was a day of misfortune for 18-year-old Quillan Isidore in the 1/8 finals, crashing in all three motos as he exited the competition.
